In this Quick Take episode, we discuss the challenge of getting to the heart of what you really want as you lead your company to build what’s next for the New Year.
One of the most common leadership challenges we see in today’s complex and uncertain environment is a “head-heart disconnect.” It’s easy to dismiss the emotional (or “heart”) impact of leading a bold vision and transformational strategy. But this disconnect can show up in unexpected ways.
For instance, imagine your leadership team committing to a new direction without allocating sufficient budget and human resources in order to bring it to life. You might be thinking, “This doesn’t happen.” Yet this scenario really can happen if you and your team have agreed in principle to a strategy (such as M&A, or digitizing a company function) but have unvoiced feelings about the big changes that must happen during implementation. These changes often include laying off people we like, working together in new ways that impact relationships, and more. It can be difficult to admit emotional ambivalence to ourselves, let alone to each other.
That’s why, during our conversation, we dig deeper into the importance of recognizing the signs of this head-heart ambivalence as early as possible. We also discuss three immediately useful ways to reconcile what you really want in a way that pulls together head, heart, and commitment for moving into the future. When you and others on your team can openly communicate in this way, you have the best chance of getting what everyone really wants in the New Year.
