Mentors can come from anywhere. While some are assigned to us, the best mentorship comes from those with whom we form a personal bond of mutual respect and regard. We have been fortunate to have been (mostly informally) mentored by a world class educator and innovator — Scott’s father. In recognition of his birthday on June 9, we are sharing stories and lessons learned from this profoundly influential person we just called “Dad.”
Up until his passing at age 91, Professor W. James (“Jim”) Harper was a world-renowned educator and innovator in food science and technology. He mentored students, researchers, industry executives (and us) by challenging his mentees to be curious, think differently, and work with others in new ways. At his Celebration of Life, we heard many stories of how he guided his students and colleagues to create novel value in the world. And of course, we express our gratitude for his nurturing guidance to us over the course of our lives.
The best way to appreciate our mentors is to continue to spread their wisdom
far and wide. – Pam Harper
