In this week’s Quick Take, we discuss what it takes to go beyond best practices to claim your company’s future in the constantly changing world.
Like us, maybe you read the June 8 2026 Wall Street Journal report “The Best Companies For the Future.” The authors stated that the purpose was to “evaluate and rank how well companies in the S&P 500 are doing with measures intended to match up with future success.” The report sets out six categories of metrics that other companies can aspire to achieve in order to succeed in the future.
Find out why we believe that today’s “future-ready” metrics would not have predicted many of today’s dominant companies at their earlier stages, before they reshaped the world. We also discuss how “best practices” copied from a “best company” can become “your worst nightmare.”
Instead, we make the case for claiming your unique company’s future by applying two broad leadership principles framing what we call “The Growth Igniters® Matrix.” We show how these two principles interact to create four quadrants of leadership. Becoming aware of where you aspire to be and where you really are in the Growth Igniters® Matrix can be pivotal to achieving success in both the short term and the future. It can serve as the starting point for reimagining your leadership in ways that best fit your unique culture and stakeholders in a constantly changing world.
“We can learn from the leaders, but we don’t need to copy them to be successful.” – Pam Harper
